21 October, 2021 - 21 October, 2022

*** Please note you must register with a UK University or ISU email address ***

This Webinar is comprised of a 20 minute talk by Sam Tustain, an interview with him and a live Q&A from the audience.

Sam Tustain is a senior thermal engineer based at RAL Space, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). A graduate of the University of Southampton, Sam has a broad range of experience in the thermal design, analysis and testing of spacecraft instrumentation. His past and current projects include the SPICE instrument on ESA’s Solar Orbiter and the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). He also has experience in cryogenic test facilities and CubeSat thermal design.

This talk will introduce the types of tests that a spacecraft must pass before it is ready for launch, along with the challenges that they bring. Examples of test campaigns conducted by RAL will be explored, such as cryogenic testing of the JWST MIRI instrument.
